how much is the scrap metal of a car is worth today?

a junk car dealer gave my friend $120 for his mid-size car; i was wondering how much this guy would make when he sells it to a scrap metal dealer? I heard that just the metal in average size car is worth 2 or 3 thousand dollars, is it true?
