The Best Way To Find Your Car’s Value

Tuesday, January 13, 2009 16:08

It has been difficult to find out what your car’s true value is in today’s market. Searching through classified ads with tiny pictures is tiresome. If you bring it to CarMax they will give you a real lowball price. The dealers are looking to squeeze every last nickel out of a trade in so that is a dead end. The Kelly Blue Book Value gives you a range that you could drive a truck through. The best value for your car is the price it has been trading for in the real market. The best place to find that information is from a unlikely source. It’s Ebay.

You thought Ebay was for geeks that were selling their baseball cards. This is the 21st century. If you are not using Ebay for buying and selling everything then you are wasting your money and your time. It is the home of the best values. It is not just used stuff or junk. It is the new marketplace of new in the box dropshippers and small businesses transactions. I bought all of my Christmas gifts on Ebay. Everything was new with return policies. I bought toys, video games, the Wii including Wii fit, and gift cards. By the way, you can buy gift cards for under their value everyday on Ebay.

How do we use it for Car Values?

I will show you the step by step method to find your car’s true value.

1)If you are not a member of Ebay then follow the link to register. It is free and takes about 3 minutes to complete.

Using Ebay To Find Out What Is My Car Worth Signup?

2) We will use my car as an example. It’s a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with 35000 miles in good condition. Go to the Ebay Motors Section. Follow the link below to see the Jeep Listings.

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Complete Listings

3)This is a listing of all 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokees now up for auction of listed as Buy it Now. Buy it Now is like a classified ad price. Look at the listings for ones with current bids and short times until the auction is over. Look for ones with similar mileage. Click on the tab that says watch this item . The result of the auction will be saved in your my Ebay section for future reference.

4) The most important piece of the value process is the completed listings. You will not be able to see completed listing unless you are a member. This is the most powerful feature so signup on the link above if you have not done so already.

Completed listings have two features designated by colors. Green are completed transactions. Red are unmatched transactions. An unmatched transaction is usually the result of no bids or a reserve price. If you are selling your vehicle, you can designate a hurdle price that the auction must overcome to be sold. This hurdle is the reserve price. If I did not want to sell my car below $10,000 then I would mark that as my reserve price. Bidders do not know your reserve price.

The green transactions are the best information. Look for one that matches your condition and mileage. You will be able to narrow the value of your car into a very narrow band. I was able to find some good comps. My value is around $10,500.

5)Ebay also provides Price Research as well. The tab breaks down your model by current listings, completed listings, and Kelly Blue Book value.

Without Ebay I would have looked at the Kelly Blue Book Value and saw my car was $14-19,000. Now I know that is very unrealistic. Ebay is not only good tool for research, it is great place to list a car for sale as well. Set a reserve price and get the true value of your car in the quickest time frame
